Marine Safety Management System for Glensanda Harbour

Holcim UK Limited

Marine Safety Management System

Glensanda Harbour is part of Holcim’s Glensanda coastal super-quarry north of Oban, Argyll and Bute, as there is no road access, the 200 employees are supported by a fleet of passenger and supply vessels.

As the largest granite quarry in Europe, Glensanda produces up to 7 million tonnes of granite aggregate and armourstone annually. They recently celebrated shipping their 200 millionth tonne.

ABPmer was commissioned by Holcim UK Limited to review Glensanda Harbour's operational documents and create a Marine Safety Management System aligned to the recently updated Ports & Marine Facilities Safety Code (PMSC). This included creating:

  • A Glensanda Harbour Authority policy statement

  • A Marine Safety Plan

  • A Marine Safety Management System Manual

We also reviewed Glensanda Harbours Standard Operating Procedures and updated the Marine and Navigational Risk Assessments to meet Holcim UK Limited’s standards and expectations. To facilitate this, we carried out a site visit to review operations and PMSC requirements and ran a Hazard Identification (HAZID) workshop with Harbour Authority staff to inform the Marine Risk Assessment process.
